Mai Tokiha and her younger brother Takumi have recently been accepted into the prestigious Fuka Gakuen (Academy). This is normally good news for an pair of orphaned siblings; a place to live and a chance at a better future. However, these dreams are smashed when the ferry they are riding becomes subject to a fight between two mysterious young women who appear to have psychic abilities. This event changes her life forever, as she discovers that she too, has powers similar to them - the power known as HiME. As she struggles to come to terms with her newfound abilities, she must also deal with the chaos unfolding around her and the other HiMEs.
